You are tired of raking stone back out of the yard every spring. The gravel drive holds ruts and puddles and the low spot by the garage never dries. The mailman leaves tracks. The kids cannot ride a bike on it.

A driveway is a slab that gets driven on, so it fails the same way slabs fail. The base was thin. The fill was never packed. The joints were too far apart or too shallow. Or the whole thing was poured flat on flat ground with nowhere for water to go, and here water always finds the low corner.

How Steve Does It

First he shoots the grade from the road to the garage and works out the fall. Half an inch matters out here because there is no natural slope helping you. He decides where water leaves the drive before he decides anything else, and if the apron at the road or the culvert under it is crushed or undersized, he tells you then.

Then the old stone or the old concrete comes out, along with the topsoil under it. Soft dirt gets dug out and replaced with fill that gets packed in lifts. Stone base goes over that, usually crusher run, compacted and cut to the grade he shot, running past the edge of the pour so the edges are supported too.

Forms go up straight and staked hard, because a driveway shows every wave in a form board. Rebar goes in on chairs, tied in a grid, heavier where a truck turns or where the drive meets the garage. Thickness follows the load — a passenger drive is not the same pour as a lane a farm truck uses.

He pours, screeds, floats and lets it set before finishing. Broom finish across the traffic direction for grip in the rain. Edges tooled, then joints saw cut to real depth on a spacing that matches the thickness, laid out square with the drive so the cuts look like they belong there. Isolation joints go where the concrete meets the garage slab or the sidewalk so they can move apart instead of cracking each other.

After that it cures. He tells you when to stay off it with a foot and when to stay off it with a tire, and it is longer than most people expect. Then the edges get backfilled with dirt and raked so the yard comes back up to the concrete instead of dropping off it.
