About Marshy Hope Construction — One Man, His Own Iron, Rhodesdale MD
Steve's Story
Marshy Hope Construction is Steve Hackett. He works out of Rhodesdale, in Dorchester County, and he has been in the trade for fifteen years. The last six of those he has run his own business.
The first nine years were spent learning the ground here. Flat land, heavy soil, and a water table that comes up close to the surface. You learn quickly that what works somewhere else does not always work on the Eastern Shore. You learn where water goes, how long a wet spot stays wet, and which soft ground will hold a slab and which will not.
When he went out on his own, he did it with his own equipment. He owns a 10-ton excavator and a skid steer on tires, with a full set of dirt-work attachments. That means he is not waiting on a rental yard or another outfit's schedule to get to your job. It also means the man who gives you the price is the man in the seat.
He works from Easton down to the Delaware beaches, and from Salisbury up to Centreville. Most of the work comes from three groups of people: builders who need the dirt work and the concrete done right and on time, farmers who need lanes, entrances and ditches that hold up under equipment, and homeowners who have a wet yard, a bad drive or a slab to pour.
He does the dirt and the concrete himself. Paving is the one thing he sends out, and he says so up front instead of pretending otherwise.
