Bad concrete shows up two winters later as a crack running the length of your slab, and by then nobody wants to talk about it. What's underneath decides that: compaction, a real vapor barrier, fiber in the mix, joints cut where they belong. Steve pours four-inch fiber slabs with a smooth finish over poly on ground he compacted himself.

A footer that's off is a problem the mason inherits, the framer inherits, and the homeowner lives with. Steve digs and forms the footer, sets the rebar and uprights for block, pours and smooths it, lays the poly, pours the slab and forms the sump pit. Then the mason lays block on ground that's dead right. Builders keep his number for exactly that reason.

Flat ground and a high water table mean a pad that's a half inch off doesn't drain, it ponds. Cut, fill, compaction, rough grade and finish grade with a 10-ton excavator and a skid steer, plus silt fence and stabilized entrances so the county inspection isn't the thing that stops your job.
